Manipur is a land of diversified
culture and traditions. It is also known as the land of Lord
Krishna and Radha. This state has gifted India its one of
the specialized classical dance form repertoire lyrical Ras
Leela. The itinerants of war with Burma and the competitive
edge between the small kingdoms of Manipur became a platform
for its martial arts. With time these have become an integral
part of its cultural ethos. Polo or “Sagol Kangjei”
as it is called in Manipuri dialect has emerged from this
state and is a sport which has become a traditional part of
Manipuri’s social life.
FAIRS
& FESTIVALS OF MANIPUR
A land of rich traditions
Manipur has several fairs & festivals which is quite different
from each other in both theme and aesthetic sense. The famous
of the festivals is the most precious Ras Leela, which has
originated in the state and caters the universal massage of
love and eternity. The local Lai Haraoba, a local tribal festival
of peace and prosperity, Yaosang the biggest local festivals
of Manipur has a deep influence in the life of the people.
SPORTS
OF MANIPUR
The old history of Manipur
had shown the presence of some old and traditional versions
of the modern sports. Manipur has its own version of Polo,
called “Sagol Kangjei” is the mother of the modern
version of Polo. Khong Kangjei is Manipuri version of hockey,
played by 7 players and is a combination of hockey, football,
rugby and wrestling. The other sports are Mukna the Manipuri
wrestling, Thang-ta & Sarit-Sarak the popular and ritualistic
martial arts.
